Abstract

In the previous years, there has been an augmented growth in the sector of traditional medicine and achieving acceptance not only in developing but also developed countries due to their natural source and minor side effects. A compendious review was presided to accumulate information about medicinal plants having antimicrobial activity available in Bangladesh. Microbial infection possesses several steps including invasion of foreign substances into the host organism, their multiplication and subsequent reactions of affected tissues towards the multiplied infectious agents. The lineament conferred interpolates brief details of five medicinal plants such as Blumea lacera (Burm.f.) DC, Ethulia conyzoides L, Melothria maderaspatana (L.) Cogn, Opuntia dillenii (Ker-Gawl.) Haw and Xanthium indicum J. Koenig ex Roxb having antimicrobial activity available in Bangladesh. Different parts of these plants possess several phytochemicals like alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, terpinoids, saponins, triterpene etc. which are responsible for various pharmacological properties and extracts obtained under proper specifications and methods, showed effective antimicrobial activity. Thus the illustrated antimicrobial activity of these plants in this review clearly exhibited the importance of those medicinal plants in the modern treatment of pathogenic infection. This work may key up the researchers for further research on the probable use of medicinal plants having antimicrobial potential.
