Pulmonary Function Status in Underweight Adults: A Literature Review

Abstract

Pulmonary functions are generally determined by respiratory muscle strength, compliance of the lung, thoracic cavity, airway resistance and elastic recoil of the lungs. Vital capacity depends on age, sex, height, mass, activity status and ethnicity. Underweight status represents depleted body fat and lean tissue stores. Recent researches, meta analysis and clinical oriented literatures were taken in the study to establish evidence-based efficacy of pulmonary function status in underweight young adults. Various articles from database such as PubMed, Cochrane and Science direct were retrieved through a search by using keywords: FVC, FEV1, PEFR, underweight, BMI, pulmonary function etc. Total 20 articles were included in the study and based on their findings, a review was made.
