Abstract

India is becoming the diabetic capital of the world; it possesses a severe challenge to policymakers in healthcare administration due to complications of the disease itself. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that develops serious complications including diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetic macular edema (DME) may be diagnosed at any stage of DR that is the leading cause of blindness. DME decreases visual acuity which cannot be corrected with lenses and causes subsequent blindness if not treated in time. So, frequently diminished visual functioning hampers the day-to-day activities of people and ultimately bring down their quality of life. Available therapies for DME do not provide a satisfactory solution. Hence, it is the need of the hour to find out safe, effective, and economic therapy in alternate systems of medicine which can decelerate the progression of the disease and the risk of visual loss. Therefore an attempt is made in this review to present the concept of DME as per Ayurveda with the help of available literature in classics.
