Abstract

This paper discusses the socio-cultural functions of folklore in 21st century, Nigeria. Every society no matter its technological advancement employs one form of folklore or the other consciously or unconsciously. The transmission of folklore into writing and print does not obliterate its legality as folklore; rather, it makes it stronger and helps in diffusing it among those whom it is not nature or essential. Folklore is a vibrant standard of communication and transmission. Hardly can societal philosophy or culture survive without the help of the folklorist. It is therefore, safe that folklore occupies a great part of a people’s culture. Although folklore is believed to be as old as the human race, it is created by people, for itself and reflects their pattern of thought, reflection and behaviors.
