Abstract

AbstractWith the advancement of time and system miniaturisation, requirement of high thermal capacity material is increasing. This problem can be served by nano-fluids as they have high thermal conductivity compared to the conventional materials. Nano-fluids are the suspension of solid nano-particles in the base-fluid. Water (H2O) is considered as the base-fluid in the present work while Al2O3, Cu, TiO2, SiC and B4C are considered as nano-particles. Two-phase mixture rule and Maxwell model for calculation of effective thermal conductivity are considered. Other properties like effective density and effective specific heat are calculated using two-phase mixture rule. Concentration of the nano-particles is varied up to 10% because of the limitation of the model considered in the present study. Study reveals that with increment in the concentration of the nano-particle, effective thermal conductivity and density increases continuously, represents higher heat transfer. Specific heat of all the nano-fluids is found to increases with concentration of the nano-particle while thermal expansion coefficient of Al2O3-H2O nano-fluid increases while that of others decreases. Maxwell model predicts less thermal conductivity compared to mixture rule for same increment in nano-particle concentration. Keywords: Nano-fluids, Maxwell model, nano-particleCite this Article: Siddhartha Kosti, Kavi Grover.
