Ensuring the Protection of Flood Embankments: A Vital Necessity

  1. Birendra Kumar Singh

Abstract

In the face of flooding events, safeguarding flood embankments becomes imperative. These situationsoften involve rivers with significant water depth and velocity, leading to the exertion of considerablethrust due to the presence of standing water and the flow's speed. These embankments are typicallyconstructed using compacted non-cohesive soil. To prevent erosion of the embankment, it is crucial thatthe thrust of water applied to it remains within the bearing capacity limits of the compacted soil. Moreover, the determination of the embankment's bottom width is a critical factor, computed usingbending equations in order to withstand the force exerted by the water. This multifaceted approachensures the resilience and effectiveness of flood embankments in safeguarding against floodingincidents.
