Design of A Spillway: A Case Study

  1. Sibrat Beturkar

Abstract

A hydraulic structure constructed to discharge surplus water from the reservoir into the river on the downstream side without endangering the safety of the dam is known as Spillway. Spillway is very important structure in any dam project. Many dams have failed because of incorrect design of spillway. Spillway is most vulnerable part of dam. Proper attention has to be given to the design and construction of spillway. Spillway can be divided into different component parts and designs of these parts are dependent on each other. The energy dissipation arrangement is the most important part and has to be done carefully. There are different types which can be used, however hydraulic jump type stilling basin is found to be suitable for the present project. In the present case a complete design of a spillway suitable to suit the typical site conditions has been carried out. Spillway has been designed for maximum flood discharge of 10,500 cusec.
