Conventional and Molecular Breeding for Development of Drought Tolerant Maize Cultivars
Abstract: AbstractIn crop plants, possibility of attaining higher production level depends on the magnitude of genetic potential of germplasm and environmental conditions. Drought being the major abiotic stress, adversely affects the growth and development ultimately economic yield of maize crop in variety of ways. The precise knowledge of drought sensitive crop stages, drought tolerance imparting traits, screening techniques and breeding strategies are having the fundamental prerequisite for development of drought tolerant …

Breeding for Biotic Stresses Resistance in Vegetable Crops: A Review
Abstract: AbstractVegetable pests and diseases have major effect on its production. Although application of fungicides and pesticides has helped control plant diseases and insect/pests, but indiscriminate use of hazardous chemical causes environment pollution, chemical residues in vegetables above threshold levels and emergence of new races/biotypes. Therefore at this junction, breeding for the development of biotic resistant cultivars is major objective of vegetable breeder’s. Basic research on the genetic bases of pest …

Co-toxicity of Pyrethroid Mixtures against Field and Laboratory Reared Populations of Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. (Aphididae: Homoptera)
Abstract: AbstractCo-toxicity of fenpropathrin with deltamethrin 10 EC, esfenvalerate 5.5 EC, λ-cyhalothrin 2.5 EC and β-cyfluthrin was evaluated in field-collected and laboratory-reared populations of Lapaphis erysimi Kalt. Field population was found to be resistant to all these types of pyrethroids and RR (resistance ratio) was 31, 33, 33, 16 and 16 to fenpropathrin, deltamethrin, esfenvalerate, cyhalotiirn and β-cyfluthrin, respectively. Mixture of fenpropathrin with deltamethrin, esfenvalrate, λ-cyhalothirn and β-cyfluthrin in 1:1 ratio. …

Sterilization Protocol Optimization for Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.) in vitro Propagation from Nodal Culture
Abstract: AbstractThe present study was initiated to optimize sterilization protocol for in vitro propagation protocol from nodal culture of geranium. Three (treatment 1, 2 and 3) surface sterilization treatments were tested. According to the results of the sterilization test, the percentage of contaminated magenta in treatment 1 and 2 was 65.71 and 60%, respectively, which was highly reduced to 11.42% when Kocide 101 was applied before treating explants with Ethanol and …

Morphological Characterization and Evaluation of Twenty Two Mint Germplasm
Abstract: AbstractTwenty two mint germplasm were characterized and evaluated in the Research Field of Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during March 2012 to July 2013 with a view to find out suitable variety for commercial cultivation. Results revealed that 17 accessions produced spreading and only 5 produced erect type plant. Canopy diameter was the highest in MP-4 and the lowest in the accession MP-21. Plant height …
