Studies on Mechanical, Thermal Properties, Characterization and UV-Accelerated Weathering of HIPS-PLA Blends using Glycerol as Compatibilizer
Abstract: AbstractHIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) was blended with PLA (poly lactic acid) in three formulations as 80:20, 65:35 and 50:50% (wt%) using a twin screw extruder and by using glycerol (4%) as compatibilizer. Test specimens were prepared by using an injection moulding machine and the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties were determined. The tensile strength first decreases and then increases with increasing percentage of PLA, but lower than that of both …

An Overview on Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polypropylene
Abstract: AbstractThis review article describes the methods of fabrication of composites using carbon fibre and polypropylene and improving the mechanical properties of composites. Recycled carbon fibre/polypropylene (reCF/PP) wrap-spun yarns were compared to the virgin carbon fibre. The aim is to enhance the tensile properties of the CFRPP/SRPP intralayer hybrid composites under tensile stresses; observations of different kinds of weave patterns and layups are resulted. Keywords: Recycled carbon fibre, polypropylene, carbon fibre …

Capability Database of Injection Molding Process—Requirements Study for Wider Suitability and Higher Accuracy
Abstract: AbstractGenerally, there is little disagreement that an early consideration of dimensional accuracies achieved in production is conducive to the success of development of injection molding products. While different process capability databases (PCDBs) provide guidance for a meaningful estimation of the expected part variation, the adoption of corresponding guidelines and (proprietary) software tools seems to be, however, limited in industrial practice so far. This research paper addresses the gap between the …

Experimental Studies on the Passive Capillary Flow of Non-aqueous Working Liquids in PMMA Microfluidic Devices of Rectangular Cross-Sections
Abstract: The polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microfluidic devices are fabricated by the maskless lithography, hot embossing lithography and direct bonding technique. The effects of liquid viscosity, surface wettability and channel aspect ratio on the surface-driven capillary flow of non-aqueous working liquids are studied in the fabricated PMMA microfluidic devices. The working liquids are ethylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol. These experimental studies will be useful to manipulate different non-aqueous working liquids inside …

Synthesis and Experimental Evaluation of Graft Polymer Nanocomposite in Water Based Drilling Fluid System for Reactive Unconventional Reservoirs
Abstract: AbstractThis experimental work discusses the evaluation of polyacrylamide-grafted-gum arabic/carboxymethyl cellulose nanocomposite as a drilling mud additive for the drilling of reactive shale formations which may lead to wellbore instability. The synthesized nanocomposite was synthesized with free polymerization technique and it was characterized by XRD, FTIR, and FESEM. Then, it was preceded in the development of the WBDMS. Its effect on the rheological and filtration control properties of the formulated mud …

Mathematical Modeling of the Flexural Strength, Impact Energy and Water Absorption of a Pineapple Fibre-HDPE Composite using RSM Technique
Abstract: AbstractA pineapple fibre reinforced HDPE composite was developed. Response surface methodology (RSM) experimental design was employed using the latest Design Expert 10.0 software and the sample composites were produced by compounding using two-roll mill and subsequent thermoformimg in a hot pressing machine. Mathematical models of the flexural strength, impact energy and water absorption were developed and statistically validated. The model for the flexural strength fitted best with quadratic model while …

Effect of Different Fibers on Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene
Abstract: AbstractComposites have created a niche in today’s world market. Polypropylene is the second largely used plastic in the world. Polypropylene in its pure form cannot be used in many applications. Reinforcements are made into the pure polypropylene in order to enhance its mechanical properties. In the present paper, a review has been made on the recent advances for the various reinforcements being made into the polypropylene. The effect of fiber …
