Abstract

The Determination of the thermal conductivity of some selected local wood species from measurement of necessary parameters required in its determination were performed using the Lee's disc method of measuring the thermal conductivity of a poor conductor in the form of a flat disc. Five hardwood species commonly patronized by timber contractors, builders, woodcarvers and cabinet-makers in Ile-Ife town, Nigeria were selected. The steady state method was employed in this work. Oven dry specimen was prepared so that the thermal conductivities along and across the grain direction of the samples could be determined. The lowest thermal conductivity was obtained across the grain direction in Gmelina arborea sample as 0.0806 W/mK. Higher value of thermal conductivity was obtained along the grain direction of Ole sample as 0.2800 W/mK. The modified Lee's disc method of measuring the thermal conductivity of a poor conductor in the form of a flat disc was also employed. These woods have the thermal properties required for building constructions and other applications of woods where energy requirement is of utmost consideration. This will go a long way to relief contractors and other wood users of the cost and scarcity that the over dependence on commercial woods like Mahogany, Iroko and Obeche have initiated in the timber market and moreso in the near future.
