Abstract

Coomassie brilliant blue R-250 (CBB), an organic dye present in wastewater effluent, affects environment by reducing the photosynthetic activity in aquatic ecosystems. CBB must be eliminated from effluent as a result. In the present study, lignin was utilized as a low-cost bio adsorbent for the removal of CBB dye employing an adsorption technique in order to minimize pollution caused by CBB dye. By studying the effect of several parameters includes contact time, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and temperature on the percentage removal of CBB, the optimum adsorption rate was determined. The optimum conditions for the maximum adsorption rate of CBB were obtained at a contact time of 100 min, 50 mg/L of initial dye concentration, 0.7g of an adsorbent dosage of 0.7 g, pH 4, and a temperature of 30oC. Additionally, the adsorption kinetics, including pseudo first order and pseudo second order, were investigated. The value of regression coefficient for pseudo second order obtained as 0.995 shows that it is best suit for adsorption kinetics of the CBB adsorption process. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms models of Langmuir and Freundlich were investigated and it was identified that the Freundlich model fitted well. Thermodynamic parameters such as ∆G°, ∆S° and ∆H° were also studied, illustrating that the reaction is spontaneous and endothermic. As a result, utilizing lignin as an adsorbent to remove CBB dye from waste water is both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
