Abstract

Concrete is extensively used man-made material in the world. Solid waste management is one of the major environmental concerns globally. The development of new construction materials using recycled waste is important for the construction industries. The present study concerns the use of recycled waste as replacement of coarse aggregates, fine aggregates and cement in concrete. This is to find out the change in mechanical properties of concrete with the substitution of waste in concrete. It is observed that the use of plastic aggregates results in the formation of light weight concrete. Waste creates huge amount of garbage everyday which is much unhealthy. A sustainable reuse of waste is advantageous. Waste such as plastic waste/recycled plastic waste, organic waste ash, stone waste, construction & demolition (C&D) waste and E-waste. Plastic due to its properties such as durability, light weight and its ability to be molded into any desired shape has enhanced its popularity. However, its excessive production has become a serious threat to the environment and the human health. Disposal of wastes in the environment degrades land fertility, deteriorates aesthetic value of a place and threatens human health. The use of waste material in concrete not only makes it economical as well as helps in reducing disposal problems. This paper presents a detailed review on the method of reducing plastic waste as well as other types of waste and safeguarding natural aggregates by incorporating it into concrete.
