Abstract

Evaporation is the vital process involved in the sugar industry as this determines the quality and their efficiency at the earlier stage of production. Factors affecting the evaporation process are mass flow rate, temperature, pressure and velocity. Since flow of the sugar solution within the evaporator has a major impact on its overall performance a detailed study on it will be much useful to improve the efficiency. The flow of fluid inside the evaporator has a major effect on its performance. The study of the single phase fluid flow is done to understand the behaviour of fluid for the given operating conditions. Two types of evaporator models with different inlet conditions are developed. These include the tubes with the calandria. The models incorporate the effect of mass flowrate, temperature and pressure on the fluid properties. The initial conditions of the fluid are defined and the analysis is done. The analysis results show that both the models develop different velocity, pressure and equal distribution of juice along the tubes within the vessel. The model with inlet on the periphery shows the good increase in velocity and the equal distribution of juice to the calandria tubes. This analysis is performed using Cosmos Express 2009.
