Abstract

The efficiency of glazing installation during building construction is impacted by internal and external factors, which affect labour productivity. External factors are exogenous to the construction sites but have an overarching influence on the productivity of site operations, while internal factors emanate from the construction firms and their site operations. This study examines the internal and external factors impacting construction labour productivity for the glazing of doors and windows, using building construction works in Port Harcourt metropolis as a reference point. Semi-structured questionnaires were designed to elicit expert opinions and distributed to construction professionals in Port Harcourt. The questionnaire focused on collecting information on the influence of internal and external factors on the productivity of door and window glazing. Descriptive analysis was used in reporting the findings, which showed the influence of internal and external factors on the productivity of labour carrying out glazing installation. The descriptive analysis revealed that although external factors impact labour productivity, internal factors such as administrative and management factors as well as working conditions significantly affect workers' productivity. The findings also show that the mode of employment, years of experience, occupational hazards, safety factors, and poor wages are among thecompelling internal issues that have a direct effect on labour productivity in the glazing of doors and windows on construction sites. Addressing poor working conditions, administrative issues and other internal factors which impede labour output is necessary to improve the productivity of doors and window glazing for building construction works in Port Harcourt.
