Development of a Reliability-Based Maintenance Model for Liquefied Natural Gas Processing Facilities
Abstract
The operational performance of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants is significantly influenced by equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, and failure management. This study evaluates the reliability characteristics of major LNG process units using fault tree analysis and reliability engineering techniques to improve plant availability, minimize operational losses, and reduce maintenance costs. Reliability data covering a five-year operational period were obtained from LNG plant records and supplemented through interviews with plant personnel to identify the root causes of equipment failures. Mathematical reliability models were developed to evaluate key performance indicators including Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Total Mean Time Between Failure (TMTBF), Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), failure rate, reliability, unreliability, availability, maintenance cost, production losses, and gross margin. Monte Carlo simulation, life cycle cost analysis, and statistical methods were integrated into the reliability assessment to provide comprehensive evaluation of plant performance. The results indicate considerable variations in maintenance cost, availability, reliability, and unreliability among the different process units. The stripper unit exhibited the highest component availability, while the heat transfer unit recorded the highest gross margin, scrap disposal cost, and breakdown maintenance cost due to increased failure frequency. The findings demonstrate that equipment failure significantly affects production efficiency, economic performance, and operational safety. The developed reliability model provides an effective decision-support framework for identifying critical process units, optimizing maintenance scheduling, reducing downtime, and improving operational reliability. The study concludes that implementing preventive maintenance strategies, strengthening maintenance policies, improving operator competence, and adopting reliability-based maintenance practices will substantially enhance LNG plant productivity, safety, profitability, and long-term operational sustainability.
