Abstract

A large number of people have long-term or short-term disabilities as a result of diseases or accidents. In situations where walking is difficult or impossible, using a wheelchair is increasingly necessary. For the majority of patients with mild to medium levels of disability who are able to use the wheelchair on their own, either an electrical or manual wheelchair will suffice. Independent wheelchair use is difficult or impossible in severe cases, though. Wheelchairs are available in a variety of designs to meet the specific needs of their users. Two examples of how wheelchairs can be customized with special controls, seating arrangements, and activities only are wheelchair sports and beach wheelchairs. Wheelchair users in these situations frequently depend on someone else to maneuver the wheelchair for them and lack independent mobility. The goal of wheelchair research is to create intelligent wheelchairs that can address these issues. This essay reviews current research on intelligent wheelchair systems. Its objectives are to assess the technologies that are currently accessible and to talk about fresh future directions for our ongoing research effort.
