Abstract

This paper presents the design, development, and performance evaluation of a voice- controlled chair intended to assist elderly and physically challenged users. The primary objective is to enable hands-free mobility through voice commands such as forward, backward, left, right, and stop. A microcontroller-based control unit processes speech inputs and drives the chair using motor driver circuits. Experimental testing confirms accurate command recognition and smooth directional control under normal operating conditions. The system demonstrates reliable real- time response with minimal delay. Integration of voice recognition improves user convenience and independence. The proposed prototype offers a low-cost and efficient alternative to conventional electrically operated wheelchairs. In addition, the system incorporates basic safety features to ensure secure operation during movement. Obstacle detection sensors can be integrated to automatically stop the chair when an obstruction is detected. The design prioritizes simplicity so that users with minimal technical knowledge can operate it easily. The hardware components are selected to keep the system lightweight and portable. Power efficiency is also considered to provide longer battery backup for daily use. The voice recognition module is optimized to reduce errors caused by background noise. The system shows stable performance in indoor environments with consistent command execution. A modular design approach allows future enhancements without major modifications. User feedback mechanisms such as LEDs or buzzers help confirm command execution. The prototype demonstrates ease of maintenance and low operational cost. Future scope includes adding smartphone connectivity and GPS-based tracking features. Overall, the system proves to be a practical assistive solution that enhances mobility, independence, and quality of life for users.
