Abstract

In this experimental study the effect of cutting parameters on material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR) during turning of EN-36 material on turning machine is determined. In this work, firstly, all the cutting parameters namely, spindle speed (SS), feed rate (FR) and depth of cut (DOC) are designed by using suitable orthogonal array in Taguchi method. The experimental studies were accompanied under the varying spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut conditions. The influence of all three cutting parameters on the EN-36 was examined to study the performance characteristics in the turning of EN-36 material. Then by using the RSM, models for the MRR and TWR, as the function of response parameters are obtained. At the end, by using ANOVA, the effect of developed mathematical model is examined. As results of the experimental study, Taguchi analysis indicates that spindle speed (SS) and depth of cut (DOC) are the leading parameters that affect the MRR and TWR the most. In the same way, by using RSM, it was found that spindle speed is the leading parameter that affects the response outputs most (MRR and TWR). Both the optimization techniques predicted near results, but RSM technique seems to be more predicted than Taguchi’s analysis.
