Abstract

A distinct type composite material, viz. cement reinforced polymeric composite material has been designed and developed and is successfully implemented for fabrication of a low cost, durable, non-metallic group spur gear. This work addresses the experimental evaluation of toughness, hardness and failure characteristics under oblique compressive load and in turn determines the performance effectiveness of the composite as gear material. Few compositions of cement fillers are chosen along with the polypropylene and the composite material is fabricated following the injection molding process. The material was subjected to charpy impact test; nano-indentation and oblique-compression test; subsequently, material properties and failure characteristics of gear tooth are evaluated and studied. The results showed that with the percentage increase of cement fillers, toughness and hardness of the material enhanced within specific limit, while simultaneously, the gear showed optimal improvement of failure characteristics.
