Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the polluting strength of the industrial effluent of Gadoon-Amazi Industrial Zone (GAIZ). The main purpose of the study was to analyze the wastewater characteristics of the major industries in the subject area. Various representative samples were collected at regular interval for a period of 6–8 months. These samples were then tested in the laboratory using available standard procedures. The major industries pointed out in this study include soap and oil mill, chemical industry, ghee mill and the textile mill. The weighted average values of pH, total dissolved solid (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), temperature, chlorides, nitrates, phosphates, biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were observed to be 6.4, 18 oC, 530 mg/L, 420 mg/L, 105 mg/L, 1065 mg/L and 300 mg/L, respectively. Since, as shown in this study the polluting strength of the effluent is far beyond the national guidelines (Pak-NEQS), therefore, the study concludes with a mandatory requirement of wastewater treatment for the subject effluent, before its final disposal.
