Abstract

AbstractMeasuring of safety climate in the industries provides state of safety level among employees of how management and workers deal with safety on a day to day basis. However, researchers have struggled over the past three decades to identify the predominant factors which influence the safety climate with an objective to establish empirical relationship between them. The safety climate questionnaire containing 81 items corresponding to 20 safety climate factors was administered to 1029 employees of 22 Major Hazardous Industries (MHIs) in Karnataka, India. The data so collected was subjected to Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to identify the predominant safety climate factors based on weightage and eigen values. EFA resulted in a final set of 12 safety climate factors having 63 items. This study strongly established the prominent factors influencing the safety climate and their influence on safety climate in MHIs. This study’s findings might help the MHIs for improving the measurement and management of the safety climate within firms. Keywords: Safety climate, safety factors, exploratory factor analysis, major hazardous industriesCite this ArticleSwamy Devappa Renuka.
