Low-Noise and High-Efficiency Microwave Power Amplifiers: A Review of Advanced Circuit Techniques
Abstract
Microwave power amplifiers (PAs) are essential components of wireless transmitters, radar systems, satellite links, and microwave instrumentation. Their principal task is to deliver sufficient radio-frequency output power to a load while meeting requirements for efficiency, linearity, gain, bandwidth, stability, and spectral compliance. Modern communication waveforms, particularly OFDM and high-order modulation, exhibit high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR), forcing conventional PAs to operate with substantial output back-off and often reducing average efficiency. This review examines advanced microwave PA circuit techniques that address this challenge. It discusses conventional amplifier classes, load-modulated architectures such as Doherty and load-modulated balanced amplifiers, outphasing, envelope tracking, envelope elimination and restoration, harmonic-tuned switching modes, and digital predistortion. Semiconductor technologies including GaAs, GaN, Si LDMOS, CMOS, and SiGe are compared in terms of operating frequency, power density, integration, cost, and thermal considerations. The review also considers noise, stability, matching networks, bandwidth, thermal management, and measurement metrics. A key clarification is that low noise is not normally the primary optimization objective of a transmit power amplifier; noise figure is central to receiver LNAs, whereas PA design focuses on output power, efficiency, gain, linearity, and unwanted emissions. Noise is nevertheless relevant through phase noise, broadband noise, bias networks, and transmitter spectral quality. The paper synthesizes established research and identifies design trade- offs and future directions for broadband, multi-band, highly integrated, and energy-aware microwave transmitters. No new circuit simulation or measured prototype is claimed.
