Abstract

Nowadays, aluminum is used more often than cast iron in the production of cast parts due to the desire to reduce vehicle weight. Theoretically, austempered ductile iron can be used in high strength, light weight parts because thin wall austempered ductile iron (TWADI) components can be produced with strength-to-density ratios that are comparable to those of cast aluminum. Thus, advancements in the technology of thin wall austempered ductile iron are necessary to enable designers of energy-consuming equipment to select the best material according to its properties. In the current study, castings of ductile iron plates with varying section thicknesses of 2 and 3 mm were made using an appropriate casting design to ensure good mold filling and no chilling shrinkage.
