Abstract

In this study the efforts have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of slag based geopolymer concrete (GC) when hooked-end steel fibres have been incorporated in different percentages i.e. 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% to the mix.  The alkaline activator used in this study was the dissolution of solid sodium hydroxide flakes in liquid state sodium silicate solution, dissolved in water. The compressive strength, split-tensile strength, shear strength and prism-flexural strength were determined and the results were analyzed. The specimens were cast and the ambient room temperature curing technology (26±30°C) was adopted for all the mixes. The test results revealed that, after incorporation of hooked-end steel fibres, there was a marginal increase in compressive strength, but a significant increase in split-tensile strength and prism-flexural strength was noticed. The experimental results show that the GC mix with 1.0% dosage of fibre is shown a higher 28 day compressive strength of about 59.5MPa. Further, the maximum tensile and shear strength was obtained for 2.0% dosage of fibre- which had shown a 28-day split-tensile strength of 4.07 MPa, flexural strength of 6.79 MPa and shear strength of 4.76 MPa. The results indicate that the performance of the GC with the incorporation of fibres is far better than the mix without using the fibre.
