Abstract

High rise buildings recently has become the necessity in densely populated cities or urban areas. Along with advance building material and construction methods, construction of high rise building has increased significantly. This paper proposes a comparative study of high rise building with transfer floor with and without spandrel beams subjected to earthquake load. A 30 storey building with transfer floor at 5th floor is considered for the study. The building without spandrel beam is having vertical and torsion irregularity. So, to improve the torsional responses and other responses spandrel beams are provided.  Response spectrum analysis is used to obtain the response of building. The parameters considered for comparison are modal mass participation, time period, displacement in X and Y directions and torsional response. It can be seen that displacement in X and Y directions, torsion response for Y direction are reduced satisfactorily, even though the torsional mode could be shifted only to 2nd mode. It is also seen that though the torsional response in X direction remainsnearly unchanged it is well within the permissible limit. Keywords: Vertical irregularity, torsional irregularity, transfer floor, response spectrum analysisCite this ArticleSiddiqui Mohammed Waseque, S.N.
