Abstract

Sciatic neuritis is a common condition that describes low back pain radiating towards the leg which means manifests sensory symptoms and extended the innervated region of the affected spinal root or roots of the sciatic nerve. The symptoms of sciatica can be compared with Gridhrasi Roga in Ayurveda. The goal of this review was to determine the applicability of Viddha Karma in Gridhrasi Vyadhi (Sciatica). All the ancient Ayurveda texts of Susruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita, Astanga Hridaya Samhita, Bhawa Prakashaya, Sharangadara Samhita, Baishajjaya Ratnawali, Madhava Nidana, Chakkradatta and databases of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Ayush portal, google scholar were selected as data sources for this study. The current study demonstrates the five types of exploratory diagnostic methods and treatment modalities based on ancient works of literature. Snehana, Swedana, Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Siravedha, Raktamokshana, and Agnikarma discovered the primary treatment procedures for sciatica in Ayurveda.Viddha Karma is mainly a type of Astavidha Shastra Karma with all these methods. This study complies with the theoretical evidence related to Viddha Karma as a para surgical procedure upon Gridhrasi (sciatica). Viddha Karma's main effect is pricking, which removes the accumulated Doshas in the human body.Sciatica eliminates the vitiated Vata Dosha within the sciatic nerve-related sheaths, which ultimately alleviates Pain. According to these facts, we can consider Viddha Karma as an effective treatment method that can be used to manage pain associated with sciatic neuritis.
