Available data suggest that diet is the main culprit and a change in dietary habits and dietetics has a greater potential to improve T2DM. Aims and Objectives: To identify the dietary risk factors of T2DM and find out the association of established dietary risk factors with incidence of T2DM. Methodology: The study was an observational cross-sectional study of 15 months. The sample size was 650 (n=4pq/L2). The ethical clearance was obtained from the IEC. The diagnosed cases of T2DM of both sexes were included in the study. A semi-structured proforma was used for collection of data. Data was processed by software “R” and analyzed statistically using chi-square test and paired t test. Observation and Results: The study suggested that 90% subjects were mixed diet consumers, while 10% were vegetarians. Out of 90%, non-vegetarians there were 23.7% were red meat consumers while 66.30% were white meat consumers. Users of refined oil were 67.1% while non-refined oil users were 32.9%. 26.6% diabetic subjects were usual meal skippers while 15.4% subjects were occasional meal skippers. Discussion and Conclusion: The study revealed that majority were those who consume heavy amount of meat (>700 gm). There was significant association between meat consumption (red and white meat) and T2DM (X2=73.4, p<0.0001). Keywords: Diabetes mellitus Type 2, diet pattern, risk factorsCite this ArticleZarreen Baig, Ashraf SMS, Abdul Aziz Khan, et al.
