Abstract

The declining fuel reserves and escalating prices of diesel fuel have put forth challenges for researcher to find significant substitute for diesel. Biodiesel prepared from vegetable oil is one of the options to diesel. In present work biodiesel prepared from cotton seed oil is tested in single cylinder diesel engine. The cotton seed oil production of India is about 1190 MT in the year 2012. This shows that India has a vital option of cotton seed oil for its conventional diesel fuel to meet energy demand. Keeping operating conditions as 230 bTDC start of injection (SOI), 210 bar injection opening pressure (IOP), 17.5 compression ratio, and three hole nozzle geometry of Ø = 0.3 mm, the engine is run on diesel, biodiesel and their blends. The IOP was tested for 180 bar to 220 bar. Also, blends were varied in a step of 20% by volume. The loads were varied from no load to full load in a step of 25%. The experimental results showed that, COME biodiesel is a feasible substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel. The acceptable brake thermal efficiencies and BSFCs are achieved through the blending up of 40% CSOME with diesel fuel. However, for B20 blend, thermal efficiency 29.9% is quite closer to 30.7% thermal efficiency of diesel fuel. Hence, B20 can be a significant substitute to diesel. Also, BSFC of diesel 0.3 kg/kWh and BD20 0.4 kg/kWh is 57 and 42% lesser, respectively compared to COME biodiesel BSFC of 0.7 kg/kWh. The smoke intensity at full load for COME 100% biodiesel is 4 BSU. Moreover, the long term durability of the engine using cotton seed oil biodiesel as fuel requires further study.
