An Experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Self Efficacy on Academic Performance Among B.Sc. Nursing Students at Selected Colleges, Mangalore

Abstract

Self-efficacy refers to an individual's belief in their capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of self-efficacy on the academic performance of first-year B.Sc.Nursing students in selected colleges in Mangalore. The primary objective was to assess the relationship between self-efficacy levels and academic outcomes among these students. A quantitative research design was adopted for this study, with a sample size of 50 B.Sc. Nursing students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted on April 20, 2023, at Kailkere Rukmini Shetty Memorial College of Nursing, Mangalore, after receiving formal permission from the college administration and obtaining informed consent from all participants. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess self-efficacy and academic performance. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that 25 (50%) students demonstrated excellent self-efficacy, 19 (38%) had average self-efficacy, and 6 (12%) had poor self-efficacy. Regarding academic performance, 29 (58%) students performed well, 12 (24%) had average performance, and 9 (18%) showed below-average performance. While the data indicated a positive trend between self-efficacy and academic performance, statistical analysis did not show a significant correlation between the two variables. In conclusion, the majority of students displayed moderate levels of self-efficacy and academic performance. These findings highlight the need for educational interventions to enhance students' confidence and academic success.
