Levels of Environmental Pollutants and Urinary 1-Hydroxypyrene among Foundry WorkersBy V. Dhananjayan, B. Ravichandran, R. Nithya, M. Palanivel, K. Kalaiselvi
Abstract: Environmental and biological monitoring was conducted to measure the Total Suspended Particulate Matter (TSPM), SO2,NOx and 1-OHP among foundry workers. Among the various sampling locations melting (2466 μg/m3) and fettling (2951 μg/m3) recorded higher concentration of TSPM. The concentration of NOx and SO2 ranged between 288– 352 μg/m3 and 3.11-10.97μg/m3,respectively. Among the various heavy metals analysed, the concentration of zinc and nickel was the maximum. Although the environmental monitoring study …

Assessment of Suitability of Inland Wetland Fishes in Gujarat, India, for Human Consumption: A Focus on Organochlorine PesticidesBy V. Dhananjayan, S. Muralidharan, R. Jayakumar, P. Selvam
Abstract: The work described in this study evaluated the organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues in the inland wetland fishes of Gujarat, India, and their suitability for human consumption. Among the various OCPs analyzed, isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), γ-HCH and β-HCH were detected in 70%–80% of samples. The p,p’-DDE, metabolites of DDT were detected in higher load. Of the nine species of fishes tested, the maximum load of ∑HCH and ∑DDT was recorded …

Assessment of Exposure to and Effect of Organochlorine Pesticides on Birds in IndiaBy V. Dhananjayan, S Jayakumar, S. Muralidharan
Abstract: Effects of pesticides on birds have been well documented in many European and North American countries. Although we have some information on the levels of persistent environmental contaminants in many species of birds in India, due to lack of adequate data, we are unable to make any direct correlation with the reported population decline. Of all the birds, levels of DDT, HCH and dieldrin recorded in some of the species …
