AI-Integrated Graphene-Modified Polymer Interfaces for Real-Time Crack Detection and Autonomous Healing in Smart Concrete Structures

Abstract: This study presents the design and development of a graphene-reinforced multifunctional polymer composite interface engineered for structural reinforcement, self-sensing, and autonomous healing applications in cementitious systems. A thermosetting polymer matrix embedded with graphene nanoplatelets (0.25–1.5 wt.%) was developed to establish a conductive polymer nano-composite network. Electrical characterization confirmed a distinct percolation threshold at ~0.6–0.8 wt.%, beyond which a sharp increase in conductivity was observed due to the formation of interconnected …

Harnessing Marine and Agro-Waste Resources: Bioengineered Seaweed Polysaccharide–Coconut Films for Next-Generation Sustainable Packaging

Abstract: The increasing demand for biodegradable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics has led to significant interest in marine biopolymer-based packaging materials. This study focuses on the development of eco-friendly biocomposite films by reinforcing carrageenan, extracted from Kappaphycus alvarezii, with alkali-treated coconut at varying loadings (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w). The films were fabricated via solvent casting and subjected to comprehensive characterization. Mechanical analysis revealed substantial enhancement in tensile strength from 21.3 MPa …

High-Performance Biodegradable Films from Bamboo Derived Cellulose Nanofibers and Silk Fibroin: Engineering Sustainable Polymer Composites

Abstract: This research presents the advancement of biodegradable composite films from cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) extracted from bamboo and silk fibroin (SF) derived from Bombyx mori cocoons. CNF/SF composites were fabricated in three different compositions—CS10, CS30, and CS50—via aqueous blending and solution casting, followed by ethanol-induced β-sheet stabilization. Mechanical testing confirmed a considerable enhancement in tensile strength from 72 MPa (CS10) to 112 MPa (CS50), while Young’s modulus improved from 2.4 GPa …

    Bio-inspired Thermo-responsive and Self-Healing Polymer–PCM Hybrids for Next-Generation Smart Textile Applications

Abstract: The integration of phase change materials (PCMs) into flexible polymers represents a promising strategy for developing smart textiles with advanced thermal regulation and mechanical adaptability. However, the challenges of PCM leakage, poor mechanical strength, and durability under cyclic stress have limited their practical applications. In this study, we present a novel self-healing and elastic composite based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) incorporating 30 wt% microencapsulated PCM (mPCM) and dynamic disulfide bonds …

Thermally Regulated Polymer-PCM Composites for Efficient Solar Energy Harvesting and Storage

Abstract: This study investigates the development of high-performance; shape-stabilized polymer composites infused with phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage in solar energy applications. Polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) was employed as the core PCM due to its high latent heat and suitable melting point, while high-density polyethylene (HDPE) served as the supporting polymer matrix to provide structural stability. One of the primary limitations of PEG-based PCMs is their inherently low thermal …

Engineering Sustainable Interior Materials: Performance Analysis of PLA Composites Reinforced with Banana Stem Fiber and Spent Coffee Grounds

Abstract: This study presents the development and classification of eco-friendly composite panels reinforced with spent coffee grounds (SCG) and banana stem fibers (BSF) for interior applications. Hybrid composites were fabricated using polylactic acid (PLA) as the matrix with a constant filler loading of 30 wt%, varying BSF:SCG ratios (70:30, 60:40, 50:50). Mechanical testing revealed that the 70:30 composite exhibited the highest tensile strength (42 MPa) and flexural strength (58 MPa), whereas …

Enhanced Mechanical and Tribological Performance of Magnesium–Boron Carbide Composites Fabricated via Stir Casting for Lightweight Structural Applications

Abstract: This study investigates the fabrication and evaluation of properties of magnesium (Mg) matrix composites reinforced with boron carbide (B₄C) for lightweight structural applications. Stir casting was employed to incorporate B₄C particles at varying weight fractions (0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%) into the magnesium matrix. The influence of B₄C on density, porosity, hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance was systematically examined. Theoretical density increased from 1.74 g/cm³ (pure Mg) to 1.88 …

Sustainable Epoxy Composites Enhanced by Cellulose Nanocrystals for Structural and Thermal Applications

Abstract: This study presents the advancement and behaviour analysis of sustainable nanocomposites reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), a biodegradable and high-aspect-ratio nanofiller derived from microcrystalline cellulose. CNCs were incorporated into a bisphenol-A-based epoxy matrix at varying concentrations (0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt%) to assess their influence on mechanical, thermal, and viscoelastic properties. The tensile strength of the composites increased significantly, from 45 MPa for neat epoxy to 65 MPa …
