Cinnamon Extract and Cinnamaldehyde Inhibit the Replication of T2 Bacteriophage in E. coli: Potential for Use in Antiviral and Anticancer TherapyBy G. Goldstein, A. G. Shumaker
Abstract: An extract of cinnamon inhibits the growth of bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. At concentrations of 1, 2, 4, and 8 ml per 100 ml of Luria-Bertani broth, cinnamon extract had virtually no effect on the growth of E. coli. At the same concentrations, however, the yield of T2 bacteriophage was 98, 76, 64.5, and 61.8% of the control. Addition of cinnamon extract 37 min before infection produced a yield …

Coriander Seed Extract Enhances the Yield of T2 Bacteriophage in E. coli by Stimulating Adenylate CyclaseBy G. Goldstein, S.M. Bergman, M.K. Buss, H.K. Cordes, M.A. Cranley, N.R. Reed, M.M. Wolfe
Abstract: Coriander has been shown to have antibacterial activity in vitro. Relatively low concentrations of coriander seed extract added to LB broth have no effect on the growth of Escherichia coli. The addition of coriander seed extract to E. coli cultures growing in LB broth at a concentration of 0.012% enhanced the yield of T2 bacteriophage up to 225% of the control. Varying the length of time the extract was present …

Ginger Extract Inhibits the Replication of T2 Bacteriophage by Inhibiting the Synthesis of NucleosidesBy G. Goldstein, S.M. Bergman, M.K. Buss, M.A. Cranley, N.R. Reed
Abstract: Extracts of ginger inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses of animal cells. At concentrations of 1, 2, 4, and 6 ml of a ginger extract per 100 ml of LB broth, E. coli replication was 104.6, 117.7, 117.7, and 122.8% of the control. At concentrations of 2, 4, and 6 ml of ginger extract per 100 ml of LB broth, the yield of T2 bacteriophage decreased by 36.2, 41.8, …

Inhibition of Replication of Adenovirus by 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON)By G. Goldstein, J. L. Harden
Abstract: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The antibiotic known as 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON) inhibits the growth of several types of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. DON has also been demonstrated to inhibit the replication of poliovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, mumps, and herpes simplex virus in cultured eukaryotic cells. DON is an analogue of glutamine and inhibits the synthesis of glycoproteins and purine nucleotides in cells that are treated with the …
