Isolation of Amylase Producing Bacteria from Tella and Analysis of the Contribution of Their Amylases in ‘Tella’ (Ethiopian Local Beer) ProductionBy Berhanu Tsehai Andualem, Amare Gessesse, Mulugeta Aemero
Abstract: Abstract: ‘Tella’ is an Ethiopian home-brewed beer which is made up of different cereals and Rhamnus prinoides as bittering agent. The objective of this study was to identify efficient amylase producing bacteria isolates form ‘tella’ and compare their amylase with amylase from malt. Four potentially amylase producing bacteria (designated A, B, C, and D) were isolated and compared their amylase activities with amylase from malt using standard methods. The concentration …

Insecticidal Activity of Rotenone in Brebra (Millettia Ferruginea) Oil Refinery Residue against Different Stored Crop Insect Pests and its Prospect to Apply as Pest Control SubstanceBy Berhanu Tsehai Andualem
Abstract: Use of botanical insecticides against stored crop insect pests is environmental safer and eco-friend alternative method for crop protection. The objective was to investigate insecticidal potential of oil refinery residue with rotenone against selected insect pest of stored crops. The amount of rotenone from samples was determined by HPLC. The toxicity of the rotenone from residual extract and non-defatted sample were tested against. Acanthoscelides obtectus, Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum …

Production and Characterization of Thermostable Amylase Produced from Spore Former Thermophilic Bacilli Isolated and Screened from Teff (Eragrostis teff) Starch Rich SoilBy Berhanu Tsehai Andualem
Abstract: There is a need to isolate and screen amylase-producing bacilli bacteria from soil rich in content of teff starch at high temperature environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate and screen amylase-producing bacilli isolates and characterization of their optimal amylase activities. Amylase-producing bacilli were isolated and their enzymes characterized. Effect of temperature, pH, substrate and salt concentration were determined. All isolates have clear zone over 15 mm …

Methods for Removal of Rotenone from Brebra (Millettia ferruginea) Seed, Oil and Defatted Flour under Different Treatment ConditionsBy Berhanu Tsehai Andualem, Amare Gessesse
Abstract: The main objective was to develop and determine the rotenone removal methods from different samples of defatted flour and refined oil. To remove rotenone, ethanol, pH gradient treatment, cooking and roasting were used and rotenone was determined by HPLC analysis. Most of the rotenone (0.701%) from non-defatted flour is lost during defatting (0.37%) and refinery process of oil (0.02%). From raw seed, 84.1, 85.1 and 97.3% rotenone was removed by …
