Cellular Mechanisms of Autophagy in Carcinogenesis: A Narrative Review
Abstract: Autophagy is a highly conserved lysosomal degradation pathway essential for cellular homeostasis, metabolic adaptation, and survival under stress. In the context of carcinogenesis, autophagy exhibits a paradoxical and stage-dependent role. During early tumor development, autophagy acts as a tumor-suppressive mechanism by limiting genomic instability, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. Conversely, in established malignancies, cancer cells exploit autophagy to sustain growth, survive hostile tumor microenvironments, and resist anticancer therapies. Increasing evidence …

Role of Food Supplements in Premalignant Lesions: A Literature Review
Abstract: Premalignant lesions of the oral cavity are histopathological alterations in the oral epithelium linked to a higher likelihood of malignant transformation. These lesions frequently present as leukoplakia (white patches), erythroplakia (red patches), oral lichen planus, and oral submucous fibrosis. Oral cancer, categorized among head and neck malignancies, is considered the sixth most common cancer globally. While tobacco and alcohol consumption remain the primary etiological factors, increasing evidence underscores the significant …

Betel Quid without Tobacco: A Threat to Oral Health and Well-being in India
Abstract: Betel quid without tobacco, a popular cultural product across India and other South and Southeast Asian nations, is often consumed for its refreshing stimulant effects during social and religious gatherings. Despite its deep cultural significance, the health hazards of betel quid – especially its strong association with oral cancers – are often overlooked. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has identified betel quid as a human carcinogen, and …

Metabolic Reprogramming in Carcinogenesis: An Overview
Abstract: Metabolic reprogramming is a crucial mechanism via which cells modify their metabolic pathways to adjust to changes in the environment and maintain growth, survival, and function. This phenomenon is of utmost importance in a wide range of physiological and pathological situations, specifically in cancer, immunological responses, and stem cell biology. In cancer, metabolic reprogramming facilitates fast cell growth and survival, as demonstrated by the Warburg effect, where cancer cells prioritize …
