Abstract

Increasingly more electric vehicles (EVs) are being used, resulting in a higher demand for an onboard EV or onboard charging system that is efficient and safe, and that also will provide reliable performance for EVs under different conditions. A large percentage of currently developed onboard EV chargers do not include integrated smart controls and/or have no ability to monitor in real-time; therefore, the onboard EV will be operating at reduced operating efficiencies and with increased risk of fire. We present in the following paper the design of a microcontroller based onboard charger for an EV, including design and operation of the onboard system for AC to DC conversion of power for charging the battery, including filters and sequences to control the charging voltages and currents while also providing the needed levels of voltage and current to the battery as well as instrumentation for real-time voltage, current, and state of charge determination through the appropriate interfaces. Also included is the development of protection mechanisms to allow for proper thermal management, therefore guaranteeing the stability of the charger system under all conditions. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate improved performance in terms of charging efficiency and control repeatability and reliability of the charger system under different loading conditions and, therefore, confirm the suitability of using this design for practical applications in an EV.
