This paper examines the cause and effect of the flood, and designs a wireless system that can be used to monitor water flow in a remote location in the country during the raining season, and alert the operator when specified safe limit is exceeded. It involves design of both hardware and software for programming the microcontrollers and the RF module while at the same time implementing power-saving techniques, considering that it is to be deployed in a remote location using batteries and therefore, require very low maintenance. The relatively new technology, Zigbee, is used for the wireless communication between nodes, since it is created for similar applications that have low data rate and require low power consumption. The nodes include PIC18F4520 microcontroller for purposes of timing and control. C programming language was used to program the microcontrollers. The system has many components which were isolated and independently tested. The components were later successfully integrated and tested as a whole system. Keywords: Sensor node, Zigbee, PIC18F4520 microcontroller, MPLAB, LCD, alarm
