An Analytical Model for Sub grid Force-Equilibrium Approach in Submerged Vegetative Channel
Abstract: A new, analytical model of the vertical flow velocity profile of submerged vegetation has been developed. Velocity profile can be divided into three zones: linear zone which is closed to bed with linear velocitydistribution, logarithmic zone which involves the main channel without vegetative cover and the middle zone (transition zone) that is affected by the momentum of upper zone. For the surface layer, Prandtl’s mixing lengthconcept is adopted resulting in …

Compressive Strength Characteristic of Environmentally Friendly Laterite Soil Blocks
Abstract: In order to minimize the environmental impacts caused by over exploitation of natural resources for theproduction of building material, the possibility of using blended soil blocks duly burnt for load-bearing wallshas been assessed to alternate the fertile top soil of agricultural land. Since the vertical load carrying capacityprimarily depends on the compressive strength, a comprehensive study was conducted for burnt soil blocksmade with commonly available laterite and clay soil types …

Development of Statistical Relationship for Various Groundwater Quality Parameters
Abstract: Groundwater quality is complex function of its allied and constituents parameters. Such parameters are variedin nature according to the prevailing geohydrology, topography, geological features, natural establishments, water bodies like rivers, ocean and their reactions to groundwater etc. Detailed study of such groundwaterquality needs the analytical results of temporal monitoring of such parameters, however the need of precision inresults varies according the scope of research but it is quite obvious to know …

Effect of Deck-Pylon Connection in Extradosed Bridges
Abstract: An extradosed bridge is characterized by very less values of the ratio of pylon height to main span of cablestayed bridges. The obvious advantages of extradosed bridges with span length less than 250 m compel to studyvarious parameters in detail. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to study the effects of havingdifferent types of connections between pylon and deck girders. Effects of structural response such as pylonmoment, …

Slope Stability Analysis by Swedish Slip Circle Method Using C-Programming
Abstract: The side slopes of an earthen dam should be safe against shear failure. Out of the various methods of stabilityanalysis of slopes, “Swedish Slip Circle Method” is commonly used in practice. Here in the Swedish circlemethod, potential failure surface is assumed to be cylindrical in shape (i.e., circular in cross section). Afterdetermining the actuating and resisting forces for assumed failure surface, the factor of safety is calculated. Theslope is considered …

Utilization of Flue Gas Conditioned Fly Ashes in Cement and Construction Industries
Abstract: Fly ash is a waste generated from coal based boilers and has been used in various civil engineeringapplications. The pozzolanic activity of the fly ash plays a major role in its utilization. The ageing of theelectrostatic precipitators (ESPs), variation in coal and ash properties results in higher suspendedparticulate matter (SPM) emissions. Globally the SPM limits are being reduced, flue gas conditioning(FGC), i.e. dosing of ammonia and sulphur trioxide to the …

Behaviour of Irregular Concrete Buildings under Seismic Forces
Abstract: The study of irregularities in a building is a fundamental parameter controlling the seismic response of buildings. From the past history of earthquakes, it is evident that the use of improper structural configurationswith plan irregularities and soft storeys has decisive effects on the seismic performance of buildings. The buildings with abrupt changes in storey stiffness have uneven lateral force distribution along the height, whichis likely to locally induce stress concentration. …

Utilization of Statistical Learning Algorithms for Prediction of Elastic Modulus of Jointed Rock Mass
Abstract: This study uses two statistical learning algorithms for the prediction of elastic modulus (Ej) of jointed rockmass. The first algorithm uses support vector machine (SVM) that is firmly based on the theory of statisticallearning and uses regression technique by introducing -insensitive loss functionhas been adopted. Thesecond algorithm uses relevance vector machine (RVM). It is based on a Bayesian formulation of a linearmodel with an appropriate prior that results in a …
