A Comparative Review and Data-Driven Analysis of Open-Source Software Development Trends
Abstract: Open-source software (OSS) underpins a substantial portion of modern software infrastructure. Despite its importance, comparative empirical analyses that jointly examine development velocity, popularity–maintenance relationships, and cross-domain differences remain limited. This paper presents a data-driven comparative study of 28 high-impact open-source repositories spanning web frameworks, machine learning systems, infrastructure tooling, and programming language runtimes. Drawing on repository metadata, 7,082 issues, and 248,320 pull requests, we quantify issue resolution times, pull-request merge …

Evaluating Open-Source Large Language Models for Educational Applications
Abstract: Mobile healthcare technologies generate sensitive information through electronic health records, smartphones, wearable sensors, medical imaging systems, and remote monitoring platforms. These distributed data sources can improve disease prediction, continuous monitoring, clinical decision support, and personalized healthcare, but centralized collection creates substantial privacy, security, interoperability, and data-governance concerns. Federated learning (FL) provides a distributed machine learning paradigm in which participating healthcare institutions and personal devices collaboratively train models while retaining raw …

Open-Source AI Agent Frameworks: A Comparative Performance Analysis
Abstract: The rapid growth of agentic AI has led to a diverse ecosystem of open-source frameworks for developing LLM-based agents. These frameworks differ in their approaches to state management, multi-agent coordination, tool orchestration, memory, and workflow execution. This paper presents a comparative analysis of prominent open-source AI agent frameworks, including LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel, and related systems. The study synthesizes a common architectural model to identify the core components …

Quality Assurance Practices in Open-Source Versus Closed-Source Software Development: A Comparative Analysis
Abstract: Quality assurance (QA) is a decisive factor in determining whether software, whether openly developed or commercially closed, meets the reliability, maintainability, and usability expectations of its users. Open-source software (OSS) and closed-source software (CSS) pursue quality through structurally different mechanisms: OSS relies on distributed peer review, community-driven testing, and transparent issue tracking, while CSS depends on centralized quality departments, contractual accountability, and controlled release cycles. This article presents a comparative …

Tracking Bus-Factor Trajectories in Popular Open-Source Packages: A Longitudinal Measurement Framework
Abstract: Maintenance concentration in a small number of contributors, commonly called the bus factor or truck factor, is a recognized risk indicator in open-source software engineering. Existing estimation methods report this quantity as a single value computed from the current state of a project's history, which does not capture how the underlying risk moves over the project's lifetime. This paper proposes measuring the bus factor repeatedly across fixed checkpoints in a …
