Incentive Scheme and its Influence on Construction Project Performance

Abstract

Incentive is motivation given to employees in order to boost their morale in performing better at their task. Type of incentive scheme and method of application used can influence satisfaction derived by individual employee. This paper examines challenges to effective incentive scheme and benefits of incentives to construction industry. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to professionals in building industry. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive i.e., mean and ranking. It could be deduced that quality of supervision was ranked the highest among the challenging factors to effective incentive scheme while payment scored the least with mean score of 3.52. Increase in productivity of workers was concluded to be the highest benefit to construction industry with mean score of 4.39 while effective communication was analyzed to be the least. It concluded that individual need must be identified before any incentive scheme is introduced to worker. It recommended that thorough supervision and monitoring should be in place to follow up any incentive introduced o get a desired result, feedback and improve promptly in areas where there are needs.
