Abstract

Hyperprolactinaemia is a condition of elevated serum prolactin level. During pregnancy prolactin concentrations increase and, in conjunction with the other hormones of pregnancy stimulate the breast epithelium to produce milk. Lactotroph which are the cells that secrete prolactin represent 20 to 50% of the anterior pituitary cell production and are the most likely to give rise to pituitary tumors. The causes of hyperprolactinaemia are categorized broadly as physiological, pathological, drug induced and others (hypothyroidism, chronic renal failure etc.) Hyperprolactinaemia inhibits the secretion of GnRH from hypothalamus, thus FSH and LH secretion from pituitary gland are inhibited, leading to amenorrhea and infertility. A patient suffered from recurrent hyperprolactinaemia for 4 years and she had taken Ayurvedic medication—Mustadi Kwatha, Kanchnar Guggulu and Tapyadi Loha. By that she was benefited in pain and swelling in breasts and recurrent hyperprolactinaemia.
