Abstract

The rapid advancement of modern computing systems and the increasing complexity of information technology infrastructures have created a growing need for efficient automation and streamlined system administration. Among the various automation technologies available, shell programming remains one of the most practical, flexible, and widely adopted approaches for managing repetitive tasks and optimizing operational workflows in Unix-like operating systems. Shell scripts enable administrators and developers to automate command execution, coordinate system utilities, and perform routine maintenance activities with minimal manual intervention. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the fundamental principles of shell scripting, including shell environments, script creation and execution, variable management, control structures, input and output handling, file and directory operations, text processing techniques, task scheduling, debugging methods, and modular programming practices. The study also discusses the role of shell programming in improving productivity through automation of common administrative functions such as backup management, log monitoring, report generation, software deployment, and workflow orchestration. Furthermore, the review highlights essential best practices related to script security, error detection, exception handling, code readability, documentation, and long-term maintainability. Special attention is given to the integration of shell scripts with modern programming languages, cloud platforms, and DevOps tools, demonstrating their continued relevance in contemporary computing environments. By synthesizing established methodologies and practical applications, this review emphasizes the importance of shell programming as a lightweight, cost-effective, and reliable solution for enhancing workflow efficiency, system reliability, and overall operational performance across diverse computing environments.
